この回では天草での観光について書きます。
天草は、「長崎と天草地方の潜伏キリシタン関連遺産」の一つとして、ユネスコの世界文化遺産に制定されている地区があったり、天草四郎でも知られる通り、歴史の深い地区でもあります。家族でそれらのゆかりの地や、ミュージアムを訪れ、日本でも大変ユニークな歴史を学ぶことができました。
Amakusa is a region with a district registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site as part of the “Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki and Amakusa Regions,” Also, as it is well known from the figure of Amakusa Shiro, it is a region with a deep history. We were able to visit these historic sites and museums as a family.

明瀬地区の話に戻りますが、ここには明瀬さんという方がオーナーパティシエをされている天草飴本舗菓子工房えすぽるとという創作南蛮菓子店があります。下の段のチーズズコットというチーズケーキの形は１６世紀の天正遣欧少年使節が見た神父さんの帽子の形からインスパイヤされたものだそうで、なんとも可愛らしく印象的で、食感も軽くふわふわでした。
Back to the Myose area, there is a shop called Amakusa Ame Honpo Confectionery Workshop S. Port, which is owned and operated by a pastry chef named Mr. Myose. This shop specializes in creative Nanban-style confections. The “Cheese Zucotto” on the bottom shelf—a cheesecake—was inspired by the shape of a priest’s hat seen by the Tenshō Mission to Europe in the 16th century; it’s incredibly cute and the texture was light and fluffy.
十字型のお菓子は四郎の初恋ショコラという名前で、イチジクが入った、半生チョコレート焼き菓子です。イチジクの苗は天正遣欧少年使節がヨーロッパから日本に持ち帰ったそうです。形がおしゃれで、このお店の他のお菓子もそうでしたが、甘さの加減もちょうど良く、優しい感じで美味しかったです。
The cross-shaped sweet is called “Shiro's First Love Chocolate”; it's a semi-moist baked chocolate with figs inside. Apparently, the fig seeds were brought back to Japan from Europe by the Tenshō Mission to Europe. The shape was lovely, and just like the other sweets at this shop, the sweetness was perfectly balanced—it had a gentle flavor and was delicious.
このようにお菓子を通しても、日本とポルトガルとの関係や、天草の歴史やキリシタン文化の学びにもなり、改めて、私たちの祖先の土地の風土のユニークさや深さを考えさせられました。
Even through sweets, I was able to learn about the relationship between Japan and Portugal, as well as the history of Amakusa and its Christian culture, and it made me reflect once again on the uniqueness and depth of the local landscape of our ancestors’ homeland.
天草滞在後、バスあまくさ号に乗って、熊本へ移動しました。天草五橋をバスの窓越しですが、見ることができました。
2016年の熊本地震以来、復興中の熊本城。路面電車、熊本市電も走っています。
Kumamoto Castle has been undergoing reconstruction since the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. The Kumamoto City Tram is also running.
