Chiyoko Myose is a visual artist who has resided in Kansas, United States, since 1995. After graduating from Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts with a BA in English literature, she majored in painting at Wichita State University and earned a BFA. Since then, she has primarily created paintings and installation art. Her installation works often consist of large-scale pieces using thread and found objects. She has held solo exhibitions in other U.S. states, Japan, and Peru, and has participated in artist residencies in Italy. She also engages in community activities through her art, having collaborated with classical music, contemporary dance, furniture design, and the Japanese tea ceremony.
The area around Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station in Tama City is the hometown where Myose’s spouse grew up. Furthermore, the theme song “Country Road” from the Studio Ghibli anime *Whisper of the Heart*, set in this very location, includes the line, “Take me home.” Just as these lyrics suggest, the artist was guided to hold a solo exhibition in this "hometown."
This exhibition features her “A Thread X A Thread” which has become Myose’s lifework, as well as a new work from her “Gift Series.” “A Thread X A Thread” expresses the artist’s desire to cherish the moments when people meet, through the act of tying threads together. This work has gradually grown larger as visitors who have come to see it in various locations have added their own threads. Please feel free to come and tie the provided threads. The artist will be present at the gallery throughout the exhibition period and will periodically share stories about the creative process. We hope you’ll stop by and visit us.
明瀬千代子は１９９５年よりアメリカ合衆国、カンザス州に在住の美術作家です。同志社女子大学学芸学部英文学科を卒業後、Wichita State Universityで絵画を専攻し、BFAを取得。以来、主に絵画やインスタレーションアートを制作しています。インスタレーション作品は糸やファウンド・オブジェクト（見つけた物）を使った大型作品が多く、アメリカの他州や、日本、ペルーでの個展、イタリアでのアーティストレジデンシーなどを行っています。またアートを通して地域活動への参加を行なっており、クラシック音楽、コンテンポラリーダンス、家具、日本の茶道などとのコラボーレーションを行ってきました。
多摩市、聖蹟桜ヶ丘駅周辺は、明瀬の配偶者が育った故郷です。またこの地を舞台としたスタジオジブリ作アニメ「耳をすませば」の主題歌、「カントリー・ロード」には、『テイク・ミー・ホーム 私を故郷に導いて』という一説があります。この歌詞のように、作家は今回、この故郷での個展開催の想いへと導かれました。
本展では、明瀬のライフワークともなっている「糸と糸が出会う時」および、「ギフト・シリーズ」より新作を紹介します。「糸と糸が出会う時」は糸と糸を結ぶという作業によって、人と人との出会いの瞬間を大切にする、という想いを表現しています。この作品は様々な場所で観に来て下さった方にも、糸を付け加えていただき、徐々に大きくなってきています。どうぞ、ご自由に、備え付けの糸を結びに来て下さい。また会期当日は作家が基本的に在廊し、随時、トークを交えながら制作過程の様子をお見せします。ぜひ、お気軽にお立ち寄りください。
