This summer, I spent about five weeks in Peru, mainly for my two solo exhibitions. It was my first time in South America and probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
A few years ago, I began thinking about exhibiting my installation works somewhere on another continent. This is because my works, especially “A Thread X A Thread,” are based on the concept of traveling to various places and meeting people.
I didn't know where that would be, but for some reason, I began thinking about going to South America. And then I felt drawn to Peru. Since childhood, visiting Peru had been one of my dreams. I started looking for art opportunities in Peru, hoping and praying for them. Especially during the past year, I focused on learning about Peruvian culture, its food, places, and history. I started learning Spanish and practiced speaking with Spanish speakers whenever I could. I also joined Zumba classes to feel the rhythm of Spanish through my body.
As if my prayers had been answered, I was able to receive two opportunities for solo exhibitions at culturally very significant venues. From then on, I worked hard to communicate with the art coordinators at both galleries. Sometimes Spanish was needed, but I was thankful that most of our communication could be in English.
My family also joined me, so we enjoyed a family vacation including visits to some of the most spectacular places in the world. The five weeks in Peru flew by. Both exhibitions were warmly received and visited by many people.
Living in a new country for a while brought some challenges, and not everything went as I planned, but in the end, it was all good. What I will remember most is the incredible kindness of the people in Peru, how art can connect people beyond languages and borders, and how blessed I am to have my wonderful family. I am truly grateful to God and the people who helped and encouraged me! The experiences I had in Peru will stay in my heart as beautiful memories forever.

今年の夏、私は主に2つの個展のためにペルーに約5週間滞在しました。南米は初めてで、おそらく一生に一度と言える経験だったと思います。
数年前から、私は世界の別の大陸のどこかで私のインスタレーション作品を展示することを考え始めました。なぜなら、私の作品、特に「AThread x A Thread」は色んな場所に行き、人に会う、というコンセプトがあるからです。
それがどこかはわからなかったのですが、ふとしたことから南アメリカへ行くことを考え始めました。そしてペルーへ行く、という思いが来ました。ペルーを訪れるのは私の夢のひとつでしたが、1年少し前から、私はペルーでのアートの機会を探し始め、その実現を夢見て祈ってきました。またペルーの食事、旅行先、歴史と言った文化について学ぶことに集中しました。スペイン語の学習を始め、スペイン語を話す人々とできるだけ多く会話するように努め、スペイン語のリズムを身体で覚えるため、ズンバのクラスに参加し始めました。
まるで私の祈りが叶ったかのように、文化的に重要な場所で個展をする機会を2つも得ることができました。それ以降は両方のギャラリーのアートコーディネーターとのコミュニケーションに尽力しました。時々スペイン語が必要でしたが、ほとんどは英語でできたことを感謝します。
家族旅行も兼ねる目的で、家族も一緒に来てくれ、世界有数のすばらしい場所を観光することができました。ペルーでの5週間はあっという間に過ぎました。両方のショーは温かく、親切に受け入れられ、多くの人々が訪れてくれました。
初めての国での生活、すべてが思った通りスムーズには進んだとは言えませんが、終わりよければすべてよし。良い経験ができました。最も記憶に残るのは、ペルーの人々の底知れぬ親切さ、アートが国や言語を超えて人々を結び、受け入れられるということ、そして、私がどれだけ大切な良い家族に恵まれているかということです。本当に、神様と、助けてくれたり応援してくれた皆様に感謝します。ペルーでの経験は美しい思い出として、生涯忘れることはありません。
ここで振り返り何回かに渡って書いてみたいと思います。
These are somewhere between Lima and Cusco, through a window from my airplane seat. これはリマとクスコの間のどこかで、飛行機の座席から窓越しに撮ったものです。
I could see the historic center of the city of Cusco. Plaza de Almas, Qorikancha, Sacsayhuaman, and Christ Branco are all in this picture. クスコの歴史的中心部が見えました。 アルマス広場、コリカンチャ、サクサイワマン、クリスト・ブランコなど写っています。
The first couple of days, I spent quietly to have a rest, and to get adjusted to the high altitude. Cusco is located at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level. Except for a severe headache the first night, I was thankful that I was no longer experiencing any major symptoms.
クスコでの最初の２日ほどは高地に慣れるために静かに休みながら過ごしました。クスコは標高３,５００mもの高地に位置しているのです。わたし自身は初日の夜にひどい頭痛に襲われた以外は、大きな症状がなくなったことに感謝しています。
We took a short walk to Plaza de Almas. It's only about a 10-minute walk from the hotel, but we found it hard work because of the altitude.
少し足を伸ばしてアルマス広場まで行って来ました。ホテルから徒歩で１０分ほどの距離なのですが、高地のため息が切れて、しんどい。
Next day, I went to the gallery space to install my work. This space for my show is called Sala de Bartolomé de las Casas. In fact, there are three exhibition spaces, and when they gave me the show, they let me choose the space I wanted. I had seen this space many times in pictures, but seeing it in person really took my breath away.
The continuous arched columns surrounding the courtyard create a well-organized and complete Spanish-style architectural space. There are no windows or doors. This space is open, both indoors and outdoors. The gentle breeze further reminds me of that feeling, too. The well-maintained nature of this place is evident, and the subtle blend into the surrounding landscape may be due to the harmonious, warm brown and cream-colored walls that blend seamlessly into the eye. The well-polished, shiny wooden floor creaks as you walk on it, evoking the charm of an old building, and the dark-colored ceiling will serve as the perfect backdrop for my installation artwork. The flowers in the stone planters bloom healthily in pink and red. Despite being one of the most famous tourist attractions in Cusco and Peru, this second-floor space was very quiet.
Wow! I can display my work in such a beautiful place for a whole month! I was deeply moved and thrilled.
次の日、ギャラリースペースに行かせてもらいました。実はこの場所には３つの展示スペースがあり、私の展示場所はバルトロメ・デ・ラス・カサス・ホールと呼ばれています。ショーをもらえた時に、３つのうちの好きなスペースを選ばせてくれたので、私はこのスペースを選ばせてもらいました。写真では何度も見ていたものの、実際にこのスペースを見ると、本当に息を呑みました。
中庭を囲む連続したアーチ型のコラムがよく整えられ完成されたスペイン風の建築様式美のスペースを作り出しています。窓ガラスもドアもありません。このスペースはオープンで、屋内でもあり、屋外でもあるのです。そよ風を感じるのがそのことをさらに感じさせてくれます。この場所がよく手入れされているのがわかると同時に、周りの景色の中にさりげなくあるように感じるのは、瓦屋根の統一された優しい茶色とクリーム色の壁が目に心地よく溶け込んでくるせいかもしれません。よく磨かれ、光っている木製の床は歩くとキシキシと音をたて、古い建築物の味わいを出し、暗い色の天井は私のインスタレーションの作品を浮かばせるバックグラウンドとしてちょうどいいと思いました。石造りのプラントケースの中の花はピンクや赤に健康に咲いています。 クスコ、またペルーでも有数の観光の名所であるにもかかわらず、２階のこの場所はとても静かでした。
このような美しい場所に私の作品を１ヶ月も展示できるなんて！！と感動しました。
The setting up of the installation was greatly helped by Mario OrorioArrascue, the curator of the show and former manager of the gallery. I had several telephone conversations with Mario even before coming to Peru. I will mention more about his help later.
インスタレーション設置はこのショーのキュレーターでもあり、このギャラリーの元マネージャーでもあったマリオ・オソリオアラスクエさんに大変助けてもらいました。マリオさんとはペルーに来る前から電話で何度か話し合いをさせてもらいました。マリオさんの助けについては後にも触れたいと思います。
While I was setting up, some people stopped to watch with interest. These ladies were tourists from Chile. They were the first to add threads to my work in this exhibition.
設置をしている途中から、興味を持って足を止めてくださる方々がいました。この女の子たちはチリからの観光客です。今回の展示で最初に糸をつけてくれました。
A typical set meal in Peru. Sopa (soup) is followed by segundo (main dish). It also comes with drinks such as mate tea and chicha morada. To be honest, the sopa alone is enough to fill me up. I was happy that this restaurant also served salad. ペルーでよくある定食セット。ソパ（スープ）にセグンド（メイン）か続きます。それにマテ茶や、チチャモラーダといった飲み物がついてくるのです。正直いって、ソパだけでお腹いっぱい。ここの店はサラダも付いていたのが嬉しい。
This is what I wrote for my social media articles with deep emotion at the beginning of July.
"I’m here at Museo Convento de Santo Domingo, Qorikancha, Cusco, Peru. It’s truly a magical place with a mix of cultures, the most important temple of the Inca Empire, and the church and convent of Santo Domingo. My installation art is going to sojourn in this unique and beautiful place for the month of July! I’m in awe …Please don’t ask me what brought me here. I myself cannot believe I’m in such a place. I can only say I was brought here in God’s hands with my art, which I started with only two pieces of thread."
これは、7月の初めに感動と共にソーシャルメディアに書いたものです。
「ペルーのクスコ、コリカンチャ ーサント・ドミンゴ修道院美術館に来ています。インカ帝国の最も重要な寺院と、サント・ドミンゴの教会と修道院がある、文化が混在している不思議な場所です。私のインスタレーション・アートは、7月の1ヶ月間、このユニークで美しい場所に寄留する予定です。本当に 畏敬の念を抱いているぐらいです。なぜここに来たのか、私に聞かないでください。私自身、このような場所にいることが信じられないのです。 たった2本の糸から始めた私のアート作品とともに、神様の御手によってここまで連れて来られたとしか言いようがないのです。」
