2022 Fall Japan Trip (3) Solo Exhibition at Garo Asuka in Asuka ２０２２年秋 日本旅行(３) 画廊飛鳥での個展

One of the purposes of this trip was to retry a solo exhibition in Asuka Village, which had to be canceled two years ago due to the Corona pandemic. The gallery is called Garo Asuka in Asuka Village. The gallery is a renovated machiya-style building. With its latticed windows, entrance, white walls, and Mushiko windows, it has the appearance of a traditional Japanese house.

Once inside, the overall dimly lit space is mysterious, yet comfortable and well-equipped with lighting fixtures, creating a pleasant exhibition space. The structure of the magnificent beams and columns is beautifully exposed, and the light shining through the latticed windows draws geometric lines on the black floor. The antique wooden chairs fit in nicely with the retro atmosphere.

The earthen floor and the passageway are also used as spaces for art galleries. When the sliding doors are opened, the wind blows through, making the space feel like a semi-outdoor space. The acoustics are also good, and music concerts are held here.

今回の旅の目的の一つは二年前にコロナ禍のためにキャンセルせざるを得なくなった明日香村での個展を再トライすることでした。場所は明日香村にある、画廊飛鳥という町屋風の建物をリノベーションしたギャラリーです。格子張りの窓や入口、白壁に虫籠窓もあり、まさに日本の伝統的古民家風の建物です。

中に入ると、全体的に薄暗い空間は、神秘的でありながら、照明器具も完備され、心地よい展示空間となっています。立派な梁や柱の構造がむき出しになっているのも美しく、格子窓から差し込む光が黒い床に幾何学的な線を描いています。アンティークな木製の椅子もしっくりなじんでレトロな雰囲気もあります。

土間や通り土間も画廊のスペースとして利用されています。引き戸を開けると、風が通り抜け、まるで半屋外のような空間にもなります。又音響効果も良く、音楽のコンサートなども持たれているようです。

I  was hoping to have a solo exhibition in Asuka ever since I had a solo exhibition at Matfield Green, KS in 2016.  Three years ago, I found this gallery on the Internet when I searched for "Asuka" and "art gallery," and intuitively thought the space would be an excellent fit for my thread piece A Thread X A Thread.  I contacted Mr. Kita, the gallery owner. I am very grateful to him for allowing me to have a solo exhibition here. Mr. Kita helped me a lot with transportation and other things. Here are some photos and a video of the exhibition.

飛鳥での個展は以前２０１６年にマットフィールドグリーンで個展をさせて頂いた時からいつかかなったらいいな、と思っていました。３年前、飛鳥、アートギャラリーというキーワードで検索した時、インターネットでこの画廊を見つけ、私の糸の作品「A Thread X A Thread 」に合うと直感的に思い、画廊オーナー喜多さんにコンタクトさせて頂きました。今回、こうして個展をさせて頂き、本当に感謝です。喜多さんには送迎など色々助けていただきました。個展の様子を写真とビデオでご紹介します。

My violinist friend came all the way from Tokushima and performed a couple of pieces for my show, one J-pop song and one hymn.  What a beautiful gift of sound!  My heart was full! 

ヴァイオリニストである私の友達が遠く徳島から来てくれ、J-popと讃美歌から二曲演奏してくれました。本当に素敵な音色の贈り物。嬉しさで胸いっぱいになりました。

2022 Fall Japan Trip (2) Asuka ２０２２年秋 日本旅行(２) 奈良明日香村探索

While I was in Japan,  I visited Asuka Village, Nara as I was expecting a solo exhibition there.  Asuka is considered to be the capital of Japan during the Asuka period (6c - 8c ).   It is called "home of the Japanese heart." My late father loved this place.  I think my father was interested in where the Japanese people were from, and where he came from.  

During my stay, I rented an electric bicycle to explore the village.  Asuka Village is preserved through the work of a public interest foundation. Among the terraced rice fields and gray tile-roofed houses, ancient tumulus and ruins stand quietly, as if nothing is happening. Much is enveloped in mystery.  Looking at these historic sites and the scenery of the village, I thought back to the people of ancient times and my late father.

日本滞在中、個展をさせてもらうということで、奈良、明日香村にやってきました。明日香村は飛鳥時代の日本の首都と考えられていて、日本人の心の故郷と呼ばれています。また明日香は私の亡き父が愛した場所です。父は、日本人はどこから来たのか、ひいては自分はどこから来たのかに興味を持っていたのだと思います。

滞在中、電気自転車をレンタルして、村を探検してみました。明日香村は公益財団法人の働きもあり、景観が保存されています。棚田やグレーの瓦屋根の家々の間に、古墳や遺跡などが何事もないかのように、静かにたたずんでいます。多くのものはミステリーに包まれています。これらの歴史的な遺物、また村の景色を見ながら、古代の人々の様子、また亡き父について、思いを馳せました。
