Peru Pt. 11. In Lima. - Amano Museum, Barranco, Kenndy Park, Independence Day

While staying in Lima, several people recommended that I visit the Amano Museum. This museum features the private collection of Japanese businessman, Mr. Yoshitaro Amano, which contains selected pieces arranged chronologically to illustrate the development of textiles and ceramics throughout Peru's Pre-Columbian cultures.

リマ滞在中、アマノ博物館を訪れました。この博物館は、日本人実業家、天野芳太郎氏の個人コレクションを展示しており、ペルーの先コロンビアン文化におけるテキスタイルまた陶器を発展を時系列に沿って紹介しています。

The museum is quietly located in the quiet area in Miraflores district, and I was soothed by the vivid colors of the koi in the garden at the entrance.博物館はミラフローレス地区の静かな場所に位置しており、入り口の庭の鯉の鮮やかな色に癒されました。

Thankfully, the Japanese language is included for all of the exhibition explanations in addition to Spanish and English. I don't think this is very common outside of Japan.　

感謝なことに、展示の説明文がスペイン語と英語に加え、日本語でも提供されていました。これは日本以外ではそれほど一般的ではないと思います。　

In the Barranco district, also known as the Art District, I was able to visit shops selling excellent selections of handmade crafts and furniture. The numerous works on display showed the influence of various cultures throughout the history of Andean civilization. It is truly remarkable how the art of countries with a long cultural history continues to influence and be passed down to the present day. I enjoyed seeing the wide variety of works, including those made using local Peruvian products and traditional techniques.

またアートディストリクトと呼ばれるバランコ地区では良いセレクションがされているハンドメイドのクラフトや家具のお店に行くことができました。飾られている作品の数々には、アンデス文明の歴史の中での様々な文化の影響が見られました。やはり文化の歴史が長い国のアートは、現在にも影響を与え、受け継がれていて面白いです。ペルーの地方の特産物や伝統技術を活かして作られたものなど、多岐に渡り、見ていて本当に楽しかったです。

It was just before Peru's Independence Day, so the city was decorated with national flags, or rather, covered in them!

ペルーの独立記念日の直前だったので、街は国旗で飾られ、というか、包まれていました！

Kennedy Park, known as Cats' Park, is also crowded with people dancing for a celebration. It felt heartwarming to see people enjoying themselves and celebrating the country's important day!

猫の公園と言われるケネディーパークもお祝いで踊る人でいっぱい。皆さん楽しんで国の大切な日をお祝いしているのを見ることができて、こちらも嬉しくなりました。

The Independence Day parade on July 28 was held not far from where I stayed, but due to traffic restrictions and large crowds, I watched it on TV.  Felices Fiestas Patrias!

7月28日の独立記念日のパレードは近くで行われていたみたいですけど、交通規制があったり、人が多そうなので、テレビで観ました。独立記念日おめでとうございます!

Peru Pt. 10 Inauguration of "Atesorando el Momento" at Galería de Arte Ryoichi Jinnai – Centro Cultural Peruano Japonés

Here are some photos from the inauguration ceremony of my solo exhibition "Atesorando el Momento" at Galería de Arte Ryoichi Jinnai – Centro Cultural Peruano Japonés, Lima, Peru.

This gallery is affiliated with the Centro Cultural Peruano Japonés, where the headquarters of the APJ Asociación Peruano Japonesa is located, and the opening reception was a formal event attended by the president of the APJ and senior officials from the Japanese Consulate in Peru.

Under the moderation of Mr. Manuel, Mr. Edwin Kenji Tengan Kanashiro of the Cultural Department gave a speech, and I gave a short greeting in Spanish and explained my work in Japanese. Mr. Manuel translated my Japanese into Spanish.  My speech in Japanese translated into Spanish..., it was the first and special experience for me. Finally, Mr. Jorge Ige Ikegawa, President of APJ, delivered a speech and led a toast to celebrate the bond between Peru and Japan. Reflecting on how my exhibition serves as a part of this bridge in that connection, I felt deeply honored and humbled. It reminded me once again that art can be a tool that connects people and countries across languages and borders.

このギャラリーはAPJ Asociación Peruano Japonesa の本部があるCentro Cultural Peruano Japonésの付属ギャラリーであり、オープニングレセプションもAPJ会長や、ペルー日本領事館の高官などを招いたフォーマルなものでした。

 

マヌエル氏の司会のもと、文化局のエドウィン・ケンジ・テンガン・カナシロ氏が演説を行い、私はスペイン語での短い挨拶と、日本語での作品説明を行いました。マヌエル氏が私の日本語をスペイン語に通訳してくれました。自分の日本語のスピーチがスペイン語になる・・・。私にとって、これは初めての、特別な経験でした。最後に、APJ会長のホルゲ・イゲイ・イケハラ氏が演説を行い、ペルーと日本の絆を祝う乾杯の音頭をとられました。私の展覧会が、両国のつながりの橋の一部とされていることを考え、深く光栄に感じ、謙虚な気持ちになりました。アートが言語や国境を越えて人と人、国と国をも結びつけるツールとなり得ることを、再び私に思い出させました。

At this exhibition, I was able to display my yellow piece, “Bloom.” It is a work created with my hope and prayers for peace. Considering the current world situation, I thought it was meaningful to exhibit this piece. Also, this year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, and I felt truly honored to be able to exhibit this piece in commemoration of that occasion.  

今回のショーでは私の黄色い作品、”Bloom"を展示することができました。平和を願う気持ちと祈りから作った作品です。昨今の世界情勢を考えてこの作品を展示することは意味のあることだと思いました。おりしも今年は日本の戦後80年。それを記念する意味でもこの作品を展示することができ、本当に光栄でした。

The venue was filled with many people, and among them, I found Mariann, my friend from Wichita! She was in Peru for her work, and when we found out on Instagram that we were both in Peru, she rushed over to the opening of the show in Lima for me. What a coincidence that we were both in the same place, South America, Peru, and Lima at the same time! No, perhaps there is no such thing as coincidence in this world. 

会場は多くの人でいっぱいでしたが、その中に私のウィチタからの友達、マリアンちゃんを見つけました！彼女は仕事でペルーに来ていたそうで、インスタグラムで二人とも同じペルーにいることを知り、リマのオープニングに駆けつけてくれました。同じ時に同じ場所、南米ペルー、リマにいるなんて、なんて偶然でしょう！いや、この世の中に、偶然というものはないのかもしれません。

Peru Pt. 9 Setting Up the Show at Galería de Arte Ryoichi Jinnai – Centro Cultural Peruano Japonés

We moved our residence to an Airbnb in the San Isidro district, and installation began at a gallery in Lima called Galería de Arte Ryoichi Jinnai – Centro Cultural Peruano Japonés.  I provided explanations, and the gallery staff helped me with the installation. Even though it is the Japanese-Peruvian Cultural Center, Japanese is hardly spoken, and most conversations are in English. However, some staff spoke only Spanish, so I used a translation app on my smartphone.  

This location serves as a bridge between Japan and Peru, dedicated to promote cultural exchange through activities such as Japanese language learning and martial arts classes. However, I discovered that it was not only for those interested in Japanese culture but also a place used by many more people. The fact that such a large facility was built not only reflects the size of the Japanese-Peruvian, Nikkei community in Peru, but also makes me consider how many people are influenced by it. There is a theater and an affiliated hospital on the back side, and when you add those together, it's surprising that there are nearly 800 employees.

住まいをサンイシドロ地区のAirbnbに移し、リマの日秘文化会館内の陣内良一アートギャラリーでの設置が始まりました。私が説明をさせてもらって、ギャラリーで働く方々が設置を手伝ってくれました。日秘文化会館とはいえ、日本語はほとんど通じず、ほとんどの場面では英語で話します。が、スペイン語しか通じない人もいたので、スマホの翻訳アプリが活躍しました。

この場所は日本とペルーを結ぶ架け橋とも言える文化会館で、日本語学習、武道などを通して、文化交流を促進するミッションがあります。しかし、日本文化に興味を持っている人のためだけではなく、それ以上に、多くの人が利用している場所だということがわかりました。このような大きな施設が作られることはペルーの日系人社会がいかに大きいかを物語っているだけではなく、その影響を受けている人も多いということを考えさせられました。裏側に劇場や付属病院があり、それも合わせると、従業員が800人近くいるというから驚きです。

I was invited to a tea ceremony at a tea room for experiencers, which is held only twice a year. 

茶室で年に2回だけという茶道体験者のための茶道の席に招いていただきました。

I was also invited to a dance performance event by Peru Nikkei Ritos y Colores. The dancers have been practicing since childhood. I have been fascinated by the dance culture of this country since I was in Cusco. At the end of the performance, the audience joined in and danced along, creating a climactic finale. Of course, I danced with them too.

またPeru Nikkei Ritos y Coloresというダンスのパフォーマンスイベントにも招待してもらいました。子供の頃から練習を積んできているそうです。クスコにいた時からこの国のダンス文化に魅了されている私。最後には観衆も巻き込んで一緒に踊って大盛り上がり。私も最後に少し踊らせてもらいました。
