"Lady Silver Leaves" at Prarie Pines

After I came up with the idea of "Silver Leaves, Silver Water", I got this idea of making a single bigger piece of a bundle of leaves to install on a lone tree.  It turns out to be a pretty neat kinetic sculpture suspended from a tree branch.  It turns in wind gracefully.  It almost looks like a lady with a dress dancing.  I decided to title it as "Lady Silver Leaves".

Here are a couple of videos of Lady Silver Leaves.

I am so grateful to be invited to make art at such a beautiful place.  I look forward to attending their music concerts.

"Silver Leaves, Silver Water" at Prarie Pines

These are some of the installed images of my outdoor installation "Silver Leaves, Silver Water" at Prairie Pines.  It depicts a journey of leaves travelling above a waterfall and a stream.  The sound and the splashes of the water are what make up this work. Since the sound of the water is like music and this project is for a music event, I was inspired to create a work which reminds of music.

Installing Day at Prairie Pines

On the days of installing at Prairie Pines, I started early to avoid the heat in the afternoon.  These days, the temperature goes up to over 100°.   I decided to build the big bundle of the leaves at the site because I figured the size of the finished work was going to be over sized for my car.

Putting them together on the ground for fun

I needed a ladder to build this piece.

Finished!  Yes, it is almost invisible!  I would say it is a good thing.

The next day, I installed the piece at the area with a waterfall.  The smaller bundle of the leaves could fit in my car.  I will post the images of the installed works in the next couple of blogs.

Making Works for Prairie Pines and Arts AMaize

This summer, I was invited to make outdoor sculptures / installations at Prairie Pines in Maize KS for a music concert series called,"Chamber Music at the Barn".  Prairie Pines has beautiful gardens with a stone bridge, ponds and waterfalls.  I fell in love with this place immediately as I was shown around.

I was attracted to two places for my works.  One is this site with a waterfall.  It is an enclosed area surrounded by trees.  From the top of the waterfall to the bottom, there is about 10 foot height difference.  The water flows into a stream which is about 30 feet long.  I was inspired by the topography and the sense of serenity of this area.

Another site is here with a lone tree in a green lawn.

Instead of the material of threads that I often use for my installation, I decided to use monofilaments and wires for this project to make my work durable outdoors.  These materials led me to make shapes of leaves.  Here is a sketch for the elements.

This is an illustration of the planned image.

After I got the approval for my proposal, I started making elements of leaves with monofilaments and wires at home.  The technique is to tie knots just like I did with my previous works.
